John Horner: Consulting Partner

Q and A

Q. What is it about consulting that first drew your interest?

In industry, I wasn’t wired just climbing the corporate IT ladder toward a CIO role. I regularly interacted with the business departments and got the most enjoyment from listening to business challenges and helping teams find solutions. I still do.

Q. Describe your work style.

There is no substitute for hard work. Don’t ask anything of anybody else you would not be prepared to do yourself. And education is continuous. Every day is a new learning day and my style is to be open and willing to take on new challenges.

Q. What can we learn from our past in your business?

Past performance is no guarantee of future success. I do not feel constrained by historical evidence, it is of course a useful indicator but it is not a driver for future performance.

Q. What is the toughest business decision you have ever made?

Joining Armanino, though this is also the best business decision I ever made. I started my Business Intelligence U.S. business from ground zero in 2008, and the only person I knew in the U.S. was my wife. In less than four years we built the business to $1.25 million in revenue which I am very proud of. I was approached by Matt Armanino and Geoffrey Wayong to join Armanino with the opportunity to expand our capabilities beyond my current structure. By 2016 our Business Intelligence practice will grow tenfold and am very pleased they persuaded me to join.

Q. What is your proudest moment?

My wedding day, although I am also very proud at our kids ongoing achievements.

Beyond the Boardroom

Deserted island wish list:

If I were stranded on a deserted island I would want my family and friends with me, some music, books and a soccer ball to kick around.

What do you do to relax when you’re not working?

I play with my kids – anything like Legos, Skylander or the Wii. I also enjoy activities such as soccer, pool and table tennis. But true relaxing is taking a hot-tub with a beer.
